Because I Am Cruel and Have Crap Taste in Music – Actresses and Cabbies Don’t Mix

***SPOILER ALERT***Harry keeps the money in the end!

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve grown to like this song – but what the French Toast is up with the guy who does the falsetto bit during the bridge? When did John Sebastian and Doug Henning have a kid?

I remember hearing this in the early to mid-70s when I was first listening to FM radio. I think DJ’s played it because it was a long song and they needed a bathroom break. That is the only explanation for the popularity of MacArthur Park. This was another of those story songs lamenting adult life in that period. Carly Simon’s That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be was another one. Adult life was all boredom, crushing disappointment, disenchantment and crap brown Ford Pintos. Dirges played on acoustic guitar. In context, the mindless music of the next decade makes perfect sense.

No wonder I like bubblegum music.

“Because I Am Cruel and Have Crap Taste in Music” Crap taste? I like “Taxi”…and W.O.L.D., and the one about the truckload of bananas!

You know, another man might have been angry, and another man might have been hurt!

BTW, Until the first time I saw the video, I always thought that part was sung by a woman.

    Thanks for commenting, Proof!

I thought it was a woman, too! Weird.

“30,000 Pounds of Bananas”, another one of Harry’s songs with a happy ending! Despite the loss of limbs and the Blue-Crossing of seven people, I suddenly have a desire to make banana bread…..
