Been There, Done That

COMICS-HEADIs it just me or is Marvel Comics suffering from short-term memory loss?Earth-X-5Thor, Goddess of Thunder was in Marvel Comics Earth X series about 15 years ago.

Disney now owns Marvel Comics as well as the television network where the shocking news of a super-hero swapping genders was rolled out as if it was momentous news. Am I missing something? Didn’t this happen already?

thor-goddess-of-thunderThe news of this new Thor was rolled out in 1997 in a special Wizard magazine supplement with some gorgeous pencil sketches by Alex Ross. I guess everything old is new again even if it wasn’t too terribly old. Either that or Disney desperately wants to add to their roster of princesses.

  1. Sure enough, Joe! And that version just couldn’t be sexist enough. I especially like the homage to Madonna’s “Bullet Bra!”

I don’t really care about the current tempest in a teapot, but I really liked Alex Ross’ concept of the Goddess of Thunder. I think the bra was based more on Wagnerian operas than over-hyped pop stars. The story concept for Thor in Earth X was also fairly intriguing. Just as Dr. Donald Blake was a construct created by Odin to teach his headstrong son humility, Loki figures that he can trick the old man into giving Thor a further lesson by turning him into a woman. Loki miscalculates badly because Thor is Thor is Thor. A nifty idea, but no TV network rolled out the idea. Of course, Disney did not own Marvel back then.

My favorite comics are the ones that were given to me as a child. They were considered disposable trash culture, and I cherished them.

    Don’t remember it, I was a tad old for comics by then… 🙂 And really don’t give a rats ass now… 😀
