Bust of Ben

Walking home from work yesterday, I came upon this nine foot bust of Benjamin Franklin at 4th and Arch Streets. I stopped to take a few photos – it wasn’t until I got home and looked at the photos that I noticed the texture of his coat was constructed using thousands of keys.

Sculptor James Peniston visited elementary schools in the city to talk about Franklin, and requested that the children bring in old keys from home. He collected over one thousand keys, which were cast to be used as part of the surface design, making the students part of the project. If you’re in the area, stop by – it’s terrific!

Amazing how you pass things and not really notice them until much later.
