C&S Discount

One of my favorite stores on 9th Street has closed, and it breaks my heart. C&S Discount has been an anchor on the corner of 9th and Carpenter for forty years, unfortunately the building has been sold and they’ve lost their lease. Yesterday, Tony and Suki shut the doors for good.

It was actually two stores, one sold party supplies – cups, containers, cake bags, sterno cans, trays with lids, balloons, and birthday banners. The store on the corner had a little bit of everything: brooms, mops, trash bags, pie tins, hair products, greeting cards, electrical tape, vacuum bags, wrapping paper, school supplies, twine, mouse traps, pails, soda, candy, cat litter, charcoal in the summer, and salt in the winter.

It was the place to go to when you invited too many people over for Thanksgiving for deep foil pans and the metal racks that suspended them over sterno cans to keep the food warm. And while you’re there, you could pick up a three foot stack of styrofoam plates and a bag of fifty plastic forks for a buck.

The boy and I would stop there every Saturday morning for a fifty cent bag of Lay’s potato chips, which we jokingly referred to as “sidewalk chips” – because he would eat them as we did our shopping.

At Christmas, they had decorations, replacement bulbs for your retro string of colored lights, and Chinese take-out style cookie boxes. They were also the go-to place for all of your New Year’s hats, plastic leis, and noisemaker needs.

It was the kind of store that every neighborhood needs, run by two incredibly sweet people. Tony and Suki will be missed, as evidenced by customers stopping by the store yesterday. We wish you all the best!

Truly sad… And one more piece of history goes away.

A butcher shop, a spice store, and now this – ugh!
