Halloween Heads • The Mummy

I know Halloween is 184 days away, but being a dyed-in-the-wool horror movie fan, I always seem to be in the Halloween Spirit!

I Was a Vector FrankensteinI started doing my series of Halloween Head vector illustrations almost 20 years ago with a simplified Frankenstein Monster done in Adobe Illustrator. I really started to chase down my vectorized villains and other digital designs with the release of the superlative Affinity Designer a little over ten years ago. Some of these monsters fall together fairly quickly while others are a bit of a struggle. Such is the case with The Mummy of which I have had a number of false starts. My gallery of rogues demanded an ancient Egyptian still alive over the millennia, and I think I may have finally got him.

Rhubarb Peach Pie

It’s spring, and rhubarb has made an appearance in the market. Usually that would result in a strawberry rhubarb pie, but I decided to shake things up and substitute peaches for the strawberries. It was heavenly! Continue reading

The Diplomat from Grorfleplotz

Once again I am ricocheting back and forth between analog and digital illustration. Today I am back in the digital domain with my latest Halloween Head which I call The Diplomat from Grorfleplotz. I’m not sure what the specific honorific would be for this diplomat from the far distant planet of Grofleplotz, but once the universal interpreter helmet it is wearing is properly calibrated, I’m sure we will get that sorted out. Hopefully, they’re coming in peace.

Teenage Beast • Coming Through!

I continue to carve out the Teenage Beast story in my sketchbooks. In this case, I am finishing up a 7-inch by 10-inch Canson XL Mixed Media pad. I pencil in my characters and then ink them in with my Sailor Fude De Mannen fountain pen which is quickly becoming my absolute favorite pen.

In this scene, my main character is turning into his more beastly persona as he goes against the flow of a mosh pit at the local punk club. Mosh pits usually swirl in a counter-clockwise direction. The Beast decides to mosh to the beat of his own drummer and travels in a clockwise direction sending punks flying to wind up in broken and bloodied heaps across the dance floor.

“Dude?! What the F…!”

The punks don’t take well to this and a fight ensues which doesn’t end well for the punks. Pain, death, horror! Aaaaaghh! CRUNCH!

They should have stuck to New Wave, I guess. Continue reading

Strawberry Raspberry Tart

The strawberries and raspberries in the market were looking fab, which inspired me to make my favorite fruit tart for Easter. It’s a pre-baked tart shell, lightly brushed with melted chocolate, filled with a sweetened cream cheese, and topped with fresh fruit. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser! Continue reading
