The BOARing Details

Here’s the pencil sketch of the boar character (sorry – I haven’t named him) from our most recent installment of Monkey & Bird. It was done in a wire-bound sketchbook with a indigo blue mechanical pencil which I wrote about earlier. After that, I scanned it and inked it digitally using Photoshop and a Wacom tablet.

I’d like to be one of those guys that did a gorgeous penciling job on a big sheet of bristol, but being that I do the scanning and lettering and Tina does the colors and patterns, I can be a little more loosey-goosie. Most times I do a sketch in the old sketchbook in the quest for a gesture and/or expression, and I’ll find that I can’t improve on it any. I’ll draw it over and over but there will be a quality about that one sketch I can’t recapture. What I do is scan the sketch and place it into a file with the other elements of the comic page. In other words, I cobble it together. It works for me. I hope it works for you.
