What I Miss About Comics…Toy Tie-Ins

Evel Knievel ComicBack in the early to mid-70s, the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle was the hottest toy in the country. Manufacturers couldn’t keep with with demand. It was on my younger brother’s Christmas list, and he had to make due with the Evel Knievel Scramble Van. My brother had to console himself with the cheezy van and the free comic that Marvel produced and was given out at toy stores. He did finally get the cycle about six months later for his birthday.

  1. I had to build the sky cycle out of a toilet paper roll, some tin foil and a few scraps of balsa wood. It was my first model rocket tht I stuffed with an Estes engine and watched it blow up on the launch pad. What memories! Merry Christmas!

  2. Joe says:

    Thanks, Gerry.

My younger brother and I never got into model rocketry. I think my Dad knew better.

The Stunt Cycle was one of the first MUST-HAVE toys I remember that were impossible to get. A few years later when I was working at a toy store, Transformers, Cabbage Patch Dolls and Trivial Pursuit were the toys that were impossible to keep in stock.
