Lydia’s Tablecloth

A few weeks ago, we lost a good neighbor. Lydia was 93 years old and had lived her entire life in a three story brick row home on our street. Her house was as neat as a pin, she did all of her own cooking, and walked three blocks to church every week. We had a cookie exchange at Christmas, Lydia’s biscotti was legendary! While I suppose you could say that 93 is a pretty good run, I’ll miss her. Another of the old guard in the neighborhood is gone.

Her relatives have begun the daunting task of clearing out nine decades of her belongings from the house. They gave me this tablecloth, which I fell in love with on sight. I did some research, it’s probably from the early 1950s based on the whimsical subject matter, no sewn in tag, and the 4+ color combination.

The images are lovely – it’s like a children’s book printed on fabric!

The colors, the stores, the shoppers, it’s so much fun to look at!

It’s nice to have something to remember Lydia by – I’ll treasure it always.
