A Halloween Brooch

When I saw this skeleton cameo, I immediately thought of my friend Penny – she’s the only person I know who loves Halloween more than I do! I found a setting for the cameo that I thought was a good fit and put the brooch together – but it needed a box. I wanted the box to look kind of decrepit, like it had been sitting in the rafters of an old barn for a few decades.

For this project you will need:

  • 1 wood or balsa wood box
  • dark acrylic paint
  • a lighter, contrasting acrylic paint
  • white school glue (cheap generic glue works best)
  • a one inch sponge brush

I began with this wood box I found in my studio. I removed the hardware and gave it two coats of acrylic paint in a warm black.

I waited an hour for the paint to thoroughly dry, and applied a thick coat of white school glue. Let the glue sit until it’s tacky/sticky, then brush on your second acrylic color – it’s important that you brush this coat on in one direction.

You can see the surface beginning to crack!

The finished product!

Nice ! (The method of manufacture, not the bony chick.)

Thanks JT – I thought men liked skinny women. All she needs is a regular skincare routine and a bucket of chicken.

  3. I didn’t realize you made them! I loved the box as much as the cameo. You need to sell these, because they’re amazing. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments.

The Halloween Queen needs her accessories!

The box was my first attempt at doing a crackled paint surface – I was really happy with the results.
