This is another picture I shot back when I was in art school in the early 1980s. Illustration majors were required to take a pricey photography course. As a sophomore, I didn’t know my ass from my elbow so I shot a bunch of pretentious crap and what I thought would get me through the class. The more interesting shots had nothing to do with the classroom assignments. I took them to simply finish off a roll for processing. I would take pictures of the big bad city of Philadelphia and places close to the campus of what once was the Philadelphia College of Art.
This is a view of 13th Street looking North probably in the Fall of 1982.

I walked 13th Street on my way home from work to see the site of the old Full Moon Saloon. The awning remains, but sadly not the sign. It looked like the place was in between owners so maybe it will be the Full Moon again.

At which point they became STOP STOP, for the love of God, STOP Girls!
That place must have been the last bar in America to tout “GO GO GIRLS”. I think the Full Moon was still around as recenly as about ten years ago.
tina! great side trip to philly – full moon saloon logo so a go go and emblazoned on my memory. the mood and clothing under the sign are strangely more early 60’s than 80’s. early 80’s – heyday of frog #2. now, already vintage. the $1.00 live sex show right next to mcdonald’s – which establishment gave one a bigger bang for the buck? love “red tumbleweave” and penn’s landing with knot in foreground. great you are published in philly mag! xo, other tina
Yeah John, it hung in there for a long time! I like to think that the dancers wore white patent leather boots and fishnets, just like Goldie Hawn in Laugh-In.
Tina – It’s amazing how that section of 13th Street has been scrubbed up – the XXX theaters have been replaced by boutiques. Mama Angelina’s and Robbins Bookstore are gone, and the All in the Family Lounge on 13th and Locust is now a daycare center!
