All that remains

Al That RemainsAs I was processing the scan of this film negative I sort of remembered what I was trying to do with these art school photos back in 1982. I had an idea where I was playing off graveyards for people such as this shot with shots in auto graveyards. Dead people. Dead cars.

Ooh, arty!

I’m not sure of the artistic merit of my photographic endeavors, but I did manage to catch places and things that are long gone. They were not necessarily cherished places, but more of the “Oh, yeah, I remember that” places. I think this was shot at a junkyard that was up near the circle where Westville ended and Brooklawn began. I was always hazy on what the exact demarcations were.

circle-130It used to have quite a few junkers strewn about. From the aerial detail it looks like it has long since been cleaned up.

The Photo Elective

Back in the 1980s, I went to art school, and I along with all of the other illustration majors were required to take a minor course in photography. We had to shoot the photos as well as process the negatives and make prints. I don’t recall what the particulars of the class assignments were although I can tell from looking at the negatives which were the assignments and which ones were shot just to finish off a roll. The shots to finish a roll are a lot more interesting. While my fellow students mostly resided and shot their photographs in the vibrant metropolis of Philadelphia, I lived and did most of my shooting in and around the staid and solid small town of Westville, New Jersey.

Joe; The aerial shot is all in Brooklawn. The middle of Big Timber Creek separates Glou. County and Camden County, So Westville and Brooklawn are divided by the Creek. The Creek is below the bottom of the picture. Westville is in Glou. Co. and Brooklawn is in Camden Co.

    Joe,

Did you know that not far from there was the end of the “UNDERGROUND RR”. It ended at the Newbold farm house on River Rd.; there in Westville. It started at the Mantua Creek, there in West deptford and Paulsboro. Traversed several old farms that once dotted along the Delaware river and Crown Point Rd.
Where the refinery is now, there was once an Amusement Park, with a huge Gazebo. John Phillip Sosa once played there and entertained masses of people.
