Hermit Cookies

Hermits are a classic New England treat – I grew up eating these in bar form, but this cookie version is just as good. Hermits are soft, spicy, studded with raisins, and delicious!

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  1. Preheat oven to 350º and line two baking pans with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, then the milk.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add flour mixture to the wet ingredients in three batches, and mix until well combined.
  4. Drop by tablespoon on to baking sheet, leaving 2″ between each cookie for spreading. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Makes 3 dozen cookies.
