The Lurking Fear

The Lurking Fear drawing

This started as a doodle in the cheap and childish sketchbook that I wrote about recently. I was still in a Halloween frame of mind as I was kicking around costume ideas for next year. I started scratching out an idea with a unsharpened 2mm red lead in a clutch holder and then worked over it with a fabulous Blackwing 602 pencil. I may be able to wring something halfway decent from this cheap little sketchbook’s thin pages after all.

If it works, it’s all good! 🙂

Indeed! I worked in an art supply store that offered (they rarely sold) letter-sized sheets of goat-skin parchment. They were priced at $65 a sheet. I could never imagine working on anything so expensive. What idea so brilliant could you possibly commit to material that expensive? I think the time would be spent tentatively staring at a blank sheet of goat-skin. Cheap sketchbooks are the opposite. Whether it’s brilliant or very far from brilliant, how can you lose? It’s a scratch pad.
