Another movie that I couldn’t live without is Howard Hawks’ 1951 production of The Thing or more specifically The Thing From Another World. It’s based on the short story “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr. The bare bones description of the story is that something mysterious has been discovered by scientists at an outpost above the Arctic Circle and the Air Force is dispatched to investigate. I won’t go into a review or heavy analysis of this cold war era, horror classic. Others have done it far better than I, and this is just a recommendation to friends and readers who may have never seen it.
The Thing is not necessarily a rare or unknown movie, but I had a hard time finding it. I had to mail order a VHS cassette from a catalog in the early 1990s. I watched and loved it. When it finally came to DVD, I ordered it, but it was a bare bones release without any special features. I’m glad to have it just the same, and I hope you give it a view.
