This vessel became famous as the\u00a0<a title=\"Flagship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flagship\">flagship<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Commodore (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commodore_(United_States)\">Commodore<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"George Dewey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Dewey\">George Dewey<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a title=\"Battle of Manila Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Manila_Bay\">Battle of Manila Bay<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<a title=\"Spanish\u2013American War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War\">Spanish\u2013American War<\/a>\u00a0in 1898. The ship was decommissioned after returning to the U.S. in 1899, but was returned to active service in 1902.<\/p>\n<p>She served until\u00a0<a title=\"World War I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War I<\/a>\u00a0as a training ship for naval cadets and as a floating barracks in\u00a0<a title=\"Charleston, South Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charleston,_South_Carolina\">Charleston, South Carolina<\/a>. In 1917, she was mobilized again for war service, patrolling the American coast and escorting transport ships.<\/p>\n<p>After World War I,\u00a0<i>Olympia<\/i>\u00a0participated in the 1919\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Allied intervention\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allied_intervention\">Allied intervention<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"Russian Civil War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Civil_War\">Russian Civil War<\/a>\u00a0and conducted cruises in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas to promote peace in the unstable Balkan countries. In 1921, the ship carried the remains of World War I&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Tomb of the Unknown Soldier\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tomb_of_the_Unknown_Soldier\">Unknown Soldier<\/a>\u00a0from France to\u00a0<a title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, where his body was interred in\u00a0<a title=\"Arlington National Cemetery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arlington_National_Cemetery\">Arlington National Cemetery<\/a>.\u00a0<i>Olympia<\/i>\u00a0was decommissioned for the last time in December 1922 and placed in reserve.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957, the U.S. Navy ceded title to the Cruiser\u00a0<i>Olympia<\/i>\u00a0Association, which restored the ship to her 1898 configuration.
