What is the deal with Zombies? I loved them in the original Dawn of the Dead, started to grow tired of them with the shlocky, chunk blowing excesses of Lucio Fulci, and figured the genre was played out by the time 1985’s Return of the Living Dead came along. Then they came back with a vengeance and won’t seem to go away. All kinds, too. Fast, slow, stupid, smart. According to Romero’s twist on the genre, they all crave flesh. I used to think it was because they were cheap to make. Slop around some grease paint and blood on some eager extras, and you have instant hordes of the undead. Nope. some of these things have enormous budgets like I Am Legend which would have been better off with grease painted bit players rather than computer generated cartoons. What’s the deal?
Anyway, here’s my contribution to the zombie genre although my version harkens back to the old black-and-white cheapies created by the likes of Val Lewton.
This was done in Illustrator. I am slowly building a stable of little, vector monster heads.
