Here’s another Photo Elective shot by Tina Garceau. As I’ve said before, all sophomore students majoring in illustration at The Philadelphia College of Art were required to take a minor course in photography where the students would take and process black and white, 35mm images. I lived in South Jersey and commuted to school, while Tina lived in and shot her photographs around the school’s downtown Philadelphia campus. Here she has a shot captured in the neighborhood of P.C.A. I don’t think the newsstand is still there, and Bookbinders in the background which was considered a Philadelphia institution at the time is long gone.

OMG… I walked passed this every day… once the speedline was built, I would get off the Locust St and exit up… worked at 15th and Chestnut in the Once Packard Bldg… then moved over to the Centre Sq. West.. where the famous Clothespin resides… love seeing Philly pix… and of course Jersey photos.. just a Jersey girl who worked in the City… thanx so much..
Thanks, Sandra!
I think I actually ate at that Bookbinders back in the 70s. We flew into Johnsville (NADC) and they took us downtown for lobster.
Bookbinders used to be a big deal when fine dining WAS steak and lobster and the vegetable was a potato.
I think William Penn was right around the corner…great memories… and Horn and Hardart was on one corner…. Woolworth’s next to the Packard Bldg… the good old days…
Yes, quite a bit has changed, but at least some of the grand old buildings are still standing. The stores and restaurants have changed hands a few times.
True Joe! But you can keep the clams…
