John B. Capewell of Westville, NJ is back with a couple of the lads loafing in a wooded area this time. John in the middle is a blur of motion as he triggers his camera’s shutter with a string. The other lads have managed to stay still long enough to make a decent exposure.
The gentleman on the right has a sack of Ben-Hur Scrap which I am assuming is chewing tobacco. It looks like he has a pinch between his cheek and gum.
This looks to be the same odd fellow who was brandishing a small pistol in a photo I posted earlier. I’m wondering if he got the chew from Adolph Tumser who was a tobacconist.
Here is the whole 5×7 glass negative:
In other news…
Harry Chambers over at Facebook’s I Grew Up in Westville, NJ page was good enough to do the research and provide me with the dates of birth and death of John Capewell’s parents, bothers and sisters.
I’m not sure who is who out side of the parents stacked on the left and John and his youngest sister stacked on the right. An educated guess could be made as to who’s who, but here’s the info from Mr. Chambers. Again, these photos are not in order to the list below:
- Mark Anthony Capewell 1850 – 1912
- Mark Capewell 1874 – 1874
- William Henry (Harry) Capewell 1875 – 1906
- John Batt Capewell 1878 – 1951
- James George Capewell 1880 – 1960
- Mark Anthony Jr. Capewell 1883 – 1967
- Whillie Batt 1857 – 1936
- Margaret (Peggy) May Capewell 1887 – 1950
- Caroline (Carrie) Harrison Capewell 1889 – 1919
- Frances Matilda Capewell 1892 – 1970

Thanks, Harry!
