Hey gang, want to be a hippie, but don’t want to live in squalor and deal with poor hygiene? Now, thanks to these handsomely embroidered patches, you too can effect the look of counter-cultural rebellion just like everyone else! All you need is one dollar; an article of clothing preferably denim, and the ability to sew or an incredibly indulgent parent who possesses the ability to sew. POOF! Now you are one of the cool kids!
I’m not sure if the NOW patch was for the National Organization of Women or was a declaration of the time.
I have no idea what 439C in the lower left corner is. If somebody out there knows, please chime in!
This sort of thing amazes me now that I look back at it. It’s hard to tell from the halftone pictured above, but you can make out the scarf and flying cap of Charles Schulz’s Snoopy. I seriously doubt that Schulz would have lent his characters to a company making cheezy patches with a urine joke. This is doubtless a bootleg, and it was being sold in a national magazine (Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos.) Bootleg plush Snoopy dogs used to be everywhere in the early 1970s. I remember tons of them at church carnivals and games of chance on the boardwalks at the Jersey shore. Tons! I guess they were easy to make. If Charles Schulz had a piece of every one of those bootlegs, he could have bought his own island!
Once again, this is from the same issue of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos from which I’ve gotten a lot of the other ads. It’s the gift that keeps giving!
