Punk Rock Girl

Although it’s been a while since I have posted drawings on this site, I have still been plugging away in my sketchbooks continuing to make my dirty little marks within them as one of my teachers in art school used to say. Teenage Beast is still the story I am toiling away on, but I’m not working on the Teenage Beast character specifically. I think I have his look down so I’ve been trying to work out the look and stories of some of the rest of the cast. Who are they? How do they move the story along? Who will survive and what will be left of them?

Which brings us to the punk rock girl.

The punk rock girl was initially a minor, throwaway character who had no service to the story other than being a victim. A major scene takes place in a punk club so I was going to need a punky chick or two. I did some doodles and this character emerged. As I drew a few more variations, I found that I really liked drawing her. She sort of came to life. I decided to give her more of a substantial role in this story.

Rather than a disposable character, she plays part in the transformation of the teenager to the beast. She is the proprietor of a punk boutique called SPAZ in an unlikely business district of a suburban town. She sits at her counter judging the people who cross the threshold of her business as to whether they are true punks or mere poseurs. None of her merchandise is priced so she gives the cool people a break and gouges the phonies. That’s if they actually make a purchase. Mostly she gets looky-loos who heard about this whole punk thing on Entertainment Tonight, and they don’t buy a thing. It’s getting real old, and bills are coming due. Our main character shows up one night near closing which draws her ire, but she comes to realize that there is something different about this guy — something intriguing.

That intrigue is not going to pay off for her. Being fun to draw bought her some time, but it’s not going to save her.

    Oh, oh… I’ve had HER for a waitress…once…

While I enjoyed some of the music, the punk era was a tedious period. Who would think a constant state of angst would be appealing?
