Dream a Little Dream

The advertisements in girl comics were always different. Whereas ads in boy’s comics appealed to hapless adventurers with home built go-kart kits, antisocial ne’er-do-wells with practical jokes and future glue sniffers who had prurient interests with x-ray spectacles, girl ads were all about self image. They were either about finger nails, weight gaining secrets for the scrawny or miraculous reducing techniques for the girls that think 5 pounds is going to make the difference between being a wallflower or the belle of the sock hop.

…and it’s GUARANTEED!

This fantastic ad along with a slew of others appeared in All New Haunted Love: Tales of Gothic Romance No. 7 published by Charlton Comics in 1975.

Dark Shadows was off the air but these lower tier comic companies couldn’t let it go. Spooky stories sold well, and there were still romance comics 50 years ago so why not combine the two?

Look at that cover! I love it. It feels ahead of its time and unlike most of the contemporary covers in the spinning rack. That’s what was great about Charlton Comics. They weren’t as big as Marvel or DC, but they took chances.
