Attaining the Unattainable

Did you know you could sleep with Raquel Welch for $1.98?

This cheesy ad for an inflatable pillow printed with Raquel Welch’s likeness ran in comics for years, but I scanned it from Our Fighting Forces featuring The Losers No. 138 which was published by DC Comics in 1972. What’s interesting about this terrific Joe Kubert cover is how much it resembles the iconic poster for the blockbuster Jaws.

Of course, Joe Kubert had the concept 2 to 3 years before the advertising agency started kicking around imagery for the 1975 blockbuster that started the concept of Summer blockbusters. Also Joe used a U-boat rather than a Carcharodon carcharias.
