Here’s a picture of Ella, John, Sr, John, Jr and Henry O. Capewell along with the family dog. Notice John B Capewell’s hands. He’s holding a spool of string in one hand and giving the string a tug with the other. The string is attached to the camera’s shutter release and thus the photographer gets to include himself in the family portrait.
Here is the entire 5″ x &” negative:
As with all of the photographs in the Capewell Collection Glass Negative Collection, I placed this 5″ x 7″ glass negative on a lightbox and shot it with a digital camera locked down on a tripod. The “processing” was done digitally on a Mac using Adobe Photoshop.

I received an e-mail and a comment last week from Joe Sweet who is related to the Capewell family by marriage. He set about the task of identifying the Capewell’s in a photograph I posted earlier.
We’ve done it! From Left to right (rear) James George Capewell (George), Frances Capewell, Mark Anthony Capewell, Jr., Margaret Capewell, William Henry Capewell, Caroline Harrison Capewell, John Batt Capewell, (front) Mark Anthony Capewell, Sr., Edna Capewell, Whillie Batt Capewell.
Incredible info! Thanks, Joe!!!

Hey Joe; He did a heck of a job just moving his finger in this one. you can even make out his wedding band. kudos to your work restoring them. Jim
Thanks, Jim. I do some clean up, but nothing exhaustive. John B. Capewell did a nice job taking photographs, and, for the most part, the 5″x7″ glass negative really gives me a lot of image to sink my teeth into. I’ve scanned 35mm slides that did not come out as nice as these old pieces of glass!
