$5.95 Death Wish

Be the first in your crowd to make your bicycle considerably more dangerous to ride with California Angel Forks! It also makes your bike that much more difficult to park in the shed or the garage. Dad won’t be pleased!

The advertisement for California Angel Forks appeared in Chili No. 5 published by Marvel Comics in 1969. Chili was an obvious Archie knock-off in the era when comic companies published more than just costumed crime fighters. There were war, western, romance, detective, funny animal and a number of other comic book genres in addition to super-heroes all stuffed into spinning racks at newsstands and corner stores. If something was successful as Archie was, it spawned imitators. Publishers did whatever they could to separate kids from their pocket change. It’s amazing to think that the publisher, distributor and retailer were all able to draw a profit form a 15¢ purchase.
