This film which was also known as Monstrosity is an utter piece of crap, but it’s one of those things that I saw on Dr. Shock when I was in grade school, and it remained lodged in some dusty corner of my brain. It doesn’t make much sense, but it makes sense in the way that dreams make sense while they are being dreamt. A rich old battle-ax is bankrolling a mad scientist’s brain transplant experiments in the hopes that she can trade in her old carcass for a newer, sleeker, sexier frame. She takes out ads for live-in domestics that are unwitting potential body donors. It’s a well-worn cliche, but it has its moments. For instance, the scientist experiments on the recently deceased, but the transplants don’t quite take, and the results wander the grounds like ghosts. The real kicker and the part I remembered creeping me out as a kid is the gal who has a cat brain popped in her noggin. She crawls around the lab hissing and mewling. Great stuff!
There has always been a penchant for remakes at the movies which is becoming ridiculous just lately. Somewhere, someone decides to remake some great or merely okay film with the results usually being mediocre or disastrous. Why not remake bad films? You can only do better than the original. I want to see a remake of The Atomic Brain!
