Movie Matinee – The Burglar

I thought I knew every movie shot in my hometown of Philadelphia, but I have to admit I never heard of The Burglar (1957). Strangely enough, I read about it in a comic book which set me off on a mad search for the film. Unlike the terrible screen adaptation of Lawrence Block’s Burglar, the old caper film is not easy to find. There were a few sketchy websites offering DVDs for sale, but I decided not to risk my credit card information. Fortunately, it turned up on The Internet Archive!

The Burglar was shot on location in Philadelphia and Atlantic City; it has a screenplay by David Goodis and stars Jayne Mansfield and Dan Duryea. Watch it embedded above or over on The Internet Archive.
