Go Big or Go Home!

I think I am finally reaching the limits of the tiny sketchpads I have been favoring over the past few years. I bought some heavyweight, toned, mixed media paper that I want to play with, and I thought something dynamic like a battle between monsters would be the subject matter. Roughing out some dynamic figures called for more real estate than my cheap, little sketchbook had to offer so I found myself dragging out larger pads along with a fairly old roll of tracing paper. I trace the bits of my own drawings that I like and redraw bits I don’t like. Ultimately this composition may be done on several scraps of vellum and taped together into a larger piece of paper. From there, I will work on my final.

Layers of tracing paper

Interesting process, and I note the redrawn right foot.

It’s the traditional way for working out a composition. I may wind up with so many layers of tracing vellum that I’ll have to break out the light-box!
