Pathos in a Pencil?

Pathos in a PencilI found this unusual advertisement for artist pencils in a 1976 issue of American Artist. Ads nowadays usually push whimsy to would-be artists — never pathos.

Different advertising back in the day!

I think it was still strange even for back then. Bic was trying to sell felt tip pens with Charles Nelson Reilly in a banana costume and did quite well at the time. I don’t know how much impact a miserable child had on pencil sales. To their credit, General Pencil still exists. I don’t think you can get Bic Banana Markers anymore.
