The Grapes of Wrath

One of my most ingenious, well received Halloween costumes cost less than five dollars to make. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a costume – all you need are some balloons, safety pins, two pieces of felt, and a really good friend to help you blow up the balloons!

Supply list:

  • 12 – 18 purple balloons
  • 12 – 18 safety pins
  • 2 pieces of green felt
  • light green embroidery thread
  • cotton balls, quilt batting, or old socks

I did some research online to find out what a grape leaf looked like. I drew it freehand  with a white colored pencil on to a piece of green felt – you can find an image, size it on your computer, print it out, and use it as a guide.

I pinned the two pieces of felt together and cut them out. I used the embroidery thread to stitch them together, leaving a two inch opening at the bottom for the stuffing – I used cotton balls – but you can use almost anything. I closed up the hole, and did some simple decorative stitches to make it look more grape leafy-like. Pin the leaf on the child’s shoulder.

Then all that’s left is to blow up the balloons and pin them to your trick-o-treater!
